I was then moved to the nearest hotel, which was organized by the cruise line and covered by insurance. After it was confirmed that I would need to be quarantined for seven days under Argentinian law before I could fly back to the United States, I was quickly removed from the ship along with six other passengers who had also tested positive. After I received further information from the Ushuaia ground staff, I ordered room services. However, I could not shake the feeling of being alone and not knowing what was going to happen next.Īfter my first positive test, I was exiled from the ship's cabin for two days.
I was also aware of how sick I could have been considering that I only had a fever, colds, and other symptoms typical of a bad head virus (though I was not symptomatic the first time I had COVID).

However, reality quickly became a reality on my return journey after I received my positive antigen test (required to enter Argentina). It felt like I had teleported to another planet. I was in Antarctica where I had spent two weeks enjoying a bucket-list cruise, admiring penguins and whales. After contracting COVID on a ship that had just docked in Ushuaia, I was sent to quarantine. However, I was not there to walk the trails of the trees or swim in the lake as most tourists do. This is the type of place outdoor adventurers dream about exploring. It is close to Alberto de Agostini National Park. The lodge was situated on a lake with sandy beaches and surrounded by tall ice-capped mountains. It would have been great in normal circumstances. It was Friday afternoon in spring, and instead of boarding my plane back to New York, I was left in my hotel room in the mountains just two hours from Ushuaia.
